Y7 Part 1: English & Mathematics

Through primary years, English and mathematics focus on building foundational literacy and numeracy through diverse experiences. From Year 7 onward, English education shifts toward writing for specific purposes, reading and comprehending more sophisticated texts, and clearly expressing thoughts through language. Mathematics also takes a significant leap, moving beyond the basic principles of numbers, operations, and geometric properties to systematize mathematical thinking and knowledge.

Year 7 English focuses on building confident communicators through three main strands.

Students work toward balanced development across speaking, reading, and writing—the full range of language use. They learn to handle the mechanics of language (structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation) while developing it as a practical tool for communication and purpose-driven writing suited to different contexts.

Year 7 Mathematics builds mathematical thinking across six interconnected strands.

Students deepen their understanding of numbers and algebra while exploring practical applications in measurement and geometry. The curriculum also introduces statistical thinking through data analysis and probability concepts. This stage can be seen as an introduction to the diverse fields of mathematics students will encounter ahead. The foundational knowledge and mathematical thinking habits developed here provide the theoretical grounding for solving various mathematical problems they'll face in the future.

As students transition into Year 7, focusing on foundational skills can ease the shift. For English, practicing reading and writing longer texts builds the stamina needed for more sophisticated communication. In mathematics, developing the ability to explain principles and formulas in your own words strengthens the mathematical thinking that will carry through their studies ahead.
